Our Palm Oil Policy Quintessence Soaps follows the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) guidelines for sourcing Palm Oil. 100% of the small amount of palm we use is from a company called Daabon Organic in Colombia, South America and has the following certifications:
*Certified Organic (USDA, Ecocert, CERES) *RSPO: a Global Standard for Sustainable Palm *Fair Trade Certification in Palm Oil *Rainforest Alliance Certification (watch the video below)
Daabon is a third generation family-owned company that grows, processes, exports and sells directly to Quintessence Soaps. It is a member of POIG Palm Oil Innovation Group POIG requires its member companies to have their policies and impacts audited by an independent third-party. This audit provides for external experts to review a company’s policies and assess its impacts, and it provides an opportunity for a company itself to benchmark its performance between auditing periods to show how it can decrease its negative environmental and social impacts. It is in the top 3 Global Palm Oil Producers assessed by Forest Heroes
Our approach to using Palm Oil
It is now well known that the creation of palm plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia has caused, and continues to cause catastrophic deforestation and habitat reduction for orangutangs (there are other social and environmental issues too!). You will easily find information on this issue on the internet.
We love to use a little palm in our bars as it helps create a harder, longer lasting bar. In an exhaustive search for truly sustainable palm we have been led away from SE Asia to South America where several companies operate to the highest sustainable standards. At the moment we buy our palm from Daabon. Daabon owns and operates its own plantations, processing plants and also exports to Australia to its own company in Sydney - so not many links in the supply chain. Transparency and integrity in our suppliers gives us peace of mind that we are NOT endangering orangutangs. We also love being able to support a business that is doing the right thing. Why penalise the good guys by boycotting their businesses?
